During the day, Hila Degany is a counsellor for Nirim, an organization for youth-at-risk that gives them a chance – sometimes their last chance – to integrate into society. Using a unique educational platform of extreme sports and physical challenges, Nirim proves to the participants that they can be successful and overcome their hardships.

At night, Hila wears a totally different hat – or shall we say party tiara – she is a bartender at one of the hippest clubs in Tel Aviv. “The happy and party atmosphere gives me the energy to do what I do during the day,” she says.

In the coming weeks, Hila is moving to Be’er Sheva, a college town in the South of Israel, in order to get a degree in Education. Before we let her leave, we asked her to share with us a special cocktail recipe for Rosh Hashanah. So here it is:

Rosh Hashanah Pomegranate Cocktail

  • Half a lime, diced
  • 4 Tablespoons of pomegranate seeds
  • Bitters
  • Arak (1.5 shots)
  • Ice

Take half a lime (diced) and 4 tablespoons of pomegranate seeds, and crush them together into a grainy paste. Add 1.5 shots of Arak (Israeli anise, ouzo is fine as well), a shot of bitters, mix together in the shaker with lots of ice, and pour it into a tall cocktail glass.

What a great way to toast the New Year!
