Austria
Complexity, Culture, & Chaos. Jewish Vienna.
Inside out.
Jewish Vienna.
Before the Holocaust, Vienna boasted one of the largest Jewish communities in Europe with a population of 180,000. The Jews’ emancipation, however, was short-lived with the rise of the Nazis in 1933. By the end of the Holocaust, the Jewish community had been whittled down to less than 4,000. Over the years, Austria, seeing itself as a victim rather than a perpetrator, failed to take historical responsibility for its part in the Holocaust. We will explore Austria’s ongoing struggle in coming to terms with its complex past.
