Jews played a vital role in Greek history – from the Hellenistic period and early history of Christianity, through the Byzantine Empire and Ottoman Greece, until the near-destruction of the Jewish community during Nazi occupation. Today, approximately 5,000 Jews live in Greece. Its current Jewish centers of Greek Jewry are Athens and Thessalonica and a handful of smaller towns, amongst them Ionanina.
